Okaloosa County commissioners to raise flags on POW/MIA Recognition Day

Okaloosa County Commissioners recently approved flying POW/MIA flags on all county buildings, and on September 21, the flags will be ceremoniously raised in conjunction with national POW/MIA Recognition Day.

“It is more important than ever to recognize this day and honor our fallen heroes every day in Okaloosa County, along side our local veterans,” said Commission Chair Don Amunds. “I encourage local businesses to do the same, so that we as a community signify the importance of POW/MIA Recognition Day.”

A ceremony will be held at Veterans Services, 6-11th Avenue, Suite G-3, in Shalimar, at 8 a.m. on Friday, September 21, in which all POW/MIA flags in the county will be raised simultaneously. The public is invited to attend. Following the Okaloosa County ceremony, county commissioners will attend a 9 a.m. ceremony scheduled at the Air Force Armament Museum.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day was passed by the 100th Congress in 1989. The POW/MIA flag, created by the National League of Families, is a symbol of our Nation’s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, unaccounted for, or missing. It is the only other flag other than the American flag, which is recognized by the United States Congress and flown over the White House.
