Capitol Steps bring musical political satire
to Niceville
(NICEVILLE, FLORIDA) - Step into the
Mattie Kelly Arts Center theatre, Saturday, February 16, 2008, 7:30 p.m.
for a healthy dose of comedy and song. Who better to lighten the burden
of our country’s primary woes than the Capitol Steps, a troupe of former
congressional staffers-turned-comedians?
The Steps have been entertaining fans by parodying politicians, and the
offices that once employed them, since 1981. Knowing that our
politicians were entertaining us daily, Steps co-founders Elaina
Newport, Bill Strauss, and Jim Aidala formed a troupe of Democrats,
Republicans, and all persuasions in between, to capitalize on the
abundant material. Since then the hugely successful comedic team has
grown to perform more than 500 shows a year nation-wide with multiple
touring troupes.
Ever vigilant for the political snafu of the day, the Steps have
lampooned presidents from Reagan to Clinton (be it Bill or Hillary!).
Priding themselves as “equal opportunity offenders,” they shake loose
material from the headlines - whether political or social.
Their most recent (27th) album, Springtime for Liberals, features
parodies of House Speaker Nanci Pelosi, Al Gore, Ted and Patrick
Kennedy, Hillary Clinton and rising star, Barack Obama. You may also
recognize spoof of some not-so-rising stars such as Donald Rumsfeld,
Dick Cheney, Ann Coulter, and George W. The primaries promise to provide
rich fodder for satire.
Tickets for the performance are available through the Mattie Kelly Arts
Center box office at 850.729.6000, or link online through niceville.com.
All seats are $35. Public Broadcasting Membercard holders may receive a
10 percent discount on up to 10 tickets by presenting their current card
at the box office.
